Ston – Croatia’s Answer to the Great Wall

Leaving Split, we set off in our little red car – our next destination for a couple of days was Dubrovnik.

Because we were driving, we decided to circumnavigate a strip of Bosnia (for car insurance reasons) and take the ferry across from Ploce to Trpanj, to travel down a funny peninsular and then back on to the mainland.

Ston

Making our way further east, we stopped at the village of Ston.

The Great Wall was built centuries ago for protection and consists of three fortresses, and the walls and fortresses are flanked by 10 rounds of 31 squares and 6 semi-circular bastions.  It is measures 1200m long.  Quite impressive.

Ston was also a first for us in our European adventure – a parking ticket!

A shady spot for lunch.

For some reason, I was craving soup – I know, tomato soup is not what you travel half way across the world for.  But, hey, it was pretty good and hit the spot.  An unflattering photo that could be mistaken for my obviously good looking brother – yikes!  Can you guess which one?  Jeff enjoyed pizza.  The keen waiter also gave us a complementary fish pate with toast – not bad at all.
