Our first view of Split was when we drove over the alps behind Split, past Mount Mosar.
A spectacular view indeed. Quite a sizeable city that spread out from the harbour. Winding our way down to the coast took some time but there was plenty to see.The traffic was busy but we found our way to our AirBnB lodgings fairly quickly located just outside the Old Town area. Finding somewhere to park your car in Split is horrendous though.
Jeff made a new friend – the owner of the accommodation. He was very, very friendly 🙂
Off we set on our first reconn of the Old Town. More slippery cobble stoned alleys – it’s a repeating theme.

It’s always time for a borek…..

The town square at dusk. Nice and quiet at this time of day.

Cathedral of Saint Domnius and Bell Tower
But the best view of Split is from the top of the Cathedral of Saint Domnius Bell Tower in the Old Town.

After a strenuous 57 meter climb by way of stone stepsand open metal stairs, the view from the top is worth it.

Old town areas are always congested.

Cruise ship alert – the Old Town becomes packed during the day as they offload from the ships.

Not for the faint hearted at all. I clung to the solid structure of the tower most of the time, only glancing out at the view to take some photos. Felt a great deal of relief when we began making our way down.
Phew! I’m not that good with heights.

After that adrenaline rush, we felt we deserved a coffee, so headed to the Republic Square.
The Prokurative (Republic Square) is surrounded on three sides with buildings that resemble those in St Marks Square in Venice giving the Square an Italian feel. There’s cafes and restaurants where you can sit and gaze at the harbour.

Not that I needed a caffeine boost – I was still a little shakey from the Bell Tower – but we enjoyed our espressos nonetheless.

Let’s walk to the top of that hill for lunch, he says.

A long, continuous climb, but it certainly was worth it. Good food + a great view.

On our wanderings amongst the cobbled alleys and roads of Split, we happened on this fab restaurant – Corto Maltese Freestyle Food. A creative, interesting and wholesome menu that saw us eat there a few times during our stay.

A squeezy fit for the garbage truck for this unsuspecting diner. Surprise!

At least sanitation is high on Split’s list of daily chores.
A couple of the delicious dishes at Corto Maltese:
Pasta, smoked sea bass, prawns, clams, cherry tomato, baby spinach:

Sea bream, almond & black sesame crust, mashd cauliflower, beluga lentils:

An evening walk along the promenade to enjoy our pre-dinner drinks.

Another fab restaurant. Jeff just loves his Rare Tuna Steak.

Me, I’ll usually go for a chicken dish – Fresh Tagliatelle with Chicken went down very well
